When your child’s adult molars erupt, it’s crucial that they remain healthy and decay free. Children can be more prone to having active decay in their mouths, especially if they consume a high sugar diet. Many molars have deep grooves in the biting surface of the tooth.
These groves look like cracks, but are completely normal, and are called ‘fissures’. The only problem with having deep grooves in teeth, is that food and plaque can get lodged in the grooves and decay. In order to prevent decay from occurring, we use a filling material to seal these grooves.
This means plaque and bacteria cannot get trapped in the tooth. It is a preventative measure which decreases your child’s risk of decay in their molars. Fissure sealants are effective as long as they are applied properly, monitored and replaced when needed.
In addition to using a fissure sealant, it’s important that your child maintains good oral health from a young age to avoid complicated procedures, discomfort and other issues in the future.
When your child starts getting their adult molars, ensure you maintain regular visits to your local My Kids Dentist and ask whether fissure sealants would benefit your child’s teeth.
